We've been feeling the excitement growing in the air for the coming Spring Festival celebration. But this year, Daoyou.org has noticed something different, special and unique(独特的) about Spring Festival 2007. In Chinese Pin Yin, the term is "Jin Zhu Nian" or "Golden Pig Year". And all around us,Daoyou.org has notice that people are getting married left and right[到处都是(俚语)]. Finally Daoyou.org began noticing all the conversation about this being
a great year to have a baby. You know we had to ask: "Why?" Here's what we dugup[经研究发现(俚语)].
●Traditionally, the pig has been a favorite animal of the Chinese. We can see this through the Pig (Zhu Ba Jie) character in Journey to the West. The Chinese have always had a certain envious(羡慕的) fascination (入迷) with the pig - while somewhat slow and lazy, the pig is almost always happily content (满足) and never lacking in what they need in life. But, what does this have to do with our Golden Pig Year?
●Traditionally, the pig has been a favorite animal of the Chinese. We can see this through the Pig (Zhu Ba Jie) character in Journey to the West. The Chinese have always had a certain envious(羡慕的) fascination (入迷) with the pig - while somewhat slow and lazy, the pig is almost always happily content (满足) and never lacking in what they need in life. But, what does this have to do with our Golden Pig Year?
●In the Chinese Zodiac (十二生肖), those born in the year of the Pig are looked upon favorably. Believed to be honest and loyal as friends, those born in Pig years are also said to be beloved and fortunate in life. The Pig is also the last Zodiac animal and completes the cycle(循环) of the twelve animals. Our answer is getting clearer, but…
●Traditional Taoism (道家的学说) talks about a system of 5 elements (天地五行) that affect the world around us: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal (or Gold), and Water. These 5 elements can also be assigned (指派) to years. Hmmm…
●Every 60 years, the Year of the Pig also falls on a year assigned as metal, or gold. 2007 happens to be that year. The number of years - 60 also represents another complete cycle - that of the clock and time. Add this all up, and you have a "Golden Pig Year." But, what about all the other "golden" years? Can we say that five years later, it'll be a "Golden Dragon Year"?
●Not every Zodiac animal goes well with each element. Some combinations of elements and animals produce good luck while others are bad luck. Good luck can lead to engagement and weddings, new job, promotions (提升), easy money, new baby, new house, etc. Bad luck - well, you get the picture. 2007 happens to be a good luck combination(结合, 联合).So after all that research (研究), what have we learned here? Through our research, we've learned that while some Chinese people really believe these traditions, many others strongly don't. Let's tune back in to reality. If, in 2007, many new golden pig babies are born, what happens in 17 years when these babies are all competing(竞争) for the same universities? Or in 21 years when all the 2007 babies are fresh out of school and looking for a job? That's something to think about; some food for thought(精神食粮).
●As the Chinese lunar New Year of 2007, also known as the Year of the Pig, approaches, lovers are rushing to wed and couples are planning to have babies. According to Chinese folk customs, the Year of the Pig is a year of good fortune.
A Bicycle Wedding
Speaking of weddings, there's an in-teresting phenomenon (现象) happening in China. From Guang Zhou in the South, to Da Lian in the North, couples are coming and going from their weddings on bicycles. These couples give different reasons for choosing to bike to their own weddings: to save money, out of love for bicycles, love for the environment, to be different, and our favorite - so that they can invite other cyclists they don't know on their way to the wedding to join in the wedding procession and to share their joy with strangers.
