纳木措湖是世界上最高的咸水湖
The Namtso Lake is the largest lake in Tibet,
and is the highest saltwater lake in the world.
纳木措湖是藏传佛教的三大圣地之一
所以纳木措湖又被称为"天湖"
Meaning Heavenly Lake in Tibetan,Namtso is
respected as one of the three holiest sites of pilgrimage.

The year of 2003 is just the water sheep year on Tibetan calendar.
佛教信徒们认为 在这一年
佛、菩萨、护法神集会在纳木措大兴法会
Buddhists believe Buddhas,Bodhisattvas and Vajras will
assemble to hold religious meeting at Namtso this year.
这时候到天湖纳木措朝圣
转湖一圈 就等于平日转湖十三圈
It is said that Circumambulation around the lake
once at the right moment
equals 13 times of that in normal years.
能消除恶习烦恼和痛苦 是功德无量的
People believe that circumambulation
around the lake at the right time
produces great merit and can clear up worries and sufferings.
因此成千上万的信徒从四面八方拥向这里
Hence thousands of pilgrims
from every corner of Tibet and others places
such as Qinghai, Sichuan and Yunnan,
cluster to Namtso.
据传说和史料记载 纳木措湖是一位女神
她坐骑青龙美丽迷人 依偎在她的丈夫
护法神念青唐古拉山的怀抱里
It is said that Namtso Lake is a tender and
beautiful fairy Riding blue dragon,
her husband, the mountain god ruling
Nyachen Thang-la holds Namtso with arms.
这一对神山圣湖的"夫妻"
They are respected as a perfect couple of
holy lake and mountain
是大自然最完美的结合
which is bestowed by nature.
更是历朝历代佛教徒们心中的圣地
Namtso Lake is respected as one of the most famous
Buddhist sacred sites of pilgrimage of generations.

药王洞是扎西半岛上自然形成的一个岩洞
Medicine King Cave was formed by the nature in Tashi Island.
佛教史料记载 这里是药师佛修行的地方
According to Buddhist annals,
Medicine master had practiced here.
想祈求健康去除病魔的信徒们
都要到这里烧香拜佛
To pray for health, every pilgrim
would incense and worship here.
因此贡觉活佛要在这里做一个转经筒
Therefore, Gongjue living Buddha is going to
make a prayer wheel here.
转经筒也叫玛尼经筒
Prayer wheels, called Chokhor(Mani scripture wheel) in Tibetan,
在藏传佛教的寺院或供佛的地方都会看到它
are very common religious objects in monastery
or other places of Tibetan Buddhism.
僧人们在筒里面裹满经书
Lamas wrap the prayer wheel full with scriptures.
按照藏传佛教的教律只要转动玛尼经筒一回
According to Tibetan Buddhist doctrines,
turning prayer wheel once
就等于把筒里藏的所有经文诵读一遍
equals to read all scriptures of prayer wheel one time.

踞天湖纳木措两百多公里的拉萨河畔
In the same day,
on Lhasa riverside where is about 200 kilometers
away from heaven lake Namtso.

这里是位于拉萨河畔曲水县的茶巴朗乡二村
The 2nd village of Chabalang, Qushui County ,
is located in the Lhasa riverside area.
住在这里的人们
划着古老的牛皮船在拉萨河上捕鱼为生
Tibetans here, make a living by fishing
on the primitive yak weather boat in Lhasa river.
虽然村庄隔着一条河就是通往拉萨的公路
The road to the Lhasa is just on the other side of Lhasa River.
但是他们的生活习惯还是有些特殊
Their living ways is unusual as other Tibetans.
他们是藏族人里极少数的一类
They are the minority of Tibetans,
因为他们吃鱼 而且会游泳 划船 水性不错
because they eat fish ,row and swim well.

顿珠平措就是这个村里的人
Dunzhupincuo lives in this unusual village.
每天他都要划着自家的牛皮船在拉萨河上来来往往
Rowing his own yak feather boat,
he comes and goes along Lhasa River,
或是打鱼或是运送过河的人
to fish or ferry every day.
可是今天他没有心思干活 看到公路上不断有人
But he couldn't work with concentration today,
磕着长头到纳木措去朝圣转湖
because he saw many pilgrims kowtowing to
circumambulate the Namtso Lake.
他也动心了 他赶着划船回家去
Disturbed by that, he is rowing back hurriedly.
他有一个奇特的想法 划牛皮船去转纳木措湖
He has a great plan to circumambulate the
Namtso Lake by his own yak feather boat.
顿珠家里只有四口人
There are four members of Dunzhu's family,
除他之外还有他的姐姐带着两个孩子
his sister and her two kids and Dunzhu.
姐夫去世的早 为了帮助姐姐把孩子拉扯成人
Because brother-in-law passed away early,
to help sister bring up children,
顿珠三十三岁了 还没有结婚
Dunzhu is still single at age of 33.
[同期声]
（顿珠平措）你一个人睡在家里干嘛 出来做活多好
Why do you rest at home? Why not do works out?
（老工匠） 这个我说不清
It is hard to say that….

这时候顿珠满脑子都是划牛皮船转湖的事儿
What Dunzhu thought these days is to circumambulate
the Namtso Lake by his own yak feather boat.
他找来了村里专做牛皮船的老工匠
He invited the old workman in village
who is good at making yak feather boat.

（老工匠） 第二天早晨叫他来做船的时候
In the next morning, I dated Dunzhu here to make boat,
他又不来了
But he didn't come.

顿珠家离天湖纳木措只有几百公里
Though Namtso is only several hundred miles away
from Dunzhu's home,
可是他从来没有去过
he has never been to the heaven lake.
凭着想象他觉得应该有一条结实的新牛皮船去转湖
He thought that he should go for circumambulation
by a new yak feather boat.
但是跟老工匠谈了之后才发现
After communication with old workman,
造新船的想法不太实际
the new idea of making new boat is unactual.
一个是造船需要很长时间 再一个需要很多钱
It would cost much time and money.
[同期声]
（顿珠姐姐）老阿爸 你先走吧 我待会儿再去找你
Go first, old father and I would talk with you later.

顿珠一家并没有失望 尤其是顿珠的大外甥
Dunzhu family didn't disappoint with that.
十六岁的索朗次仁一定要跟着舅舅去转湖
His elder nephew Suolangciren who is 16 years old
made his decision to go for circumambulation
with his mother's brother.
但是没有新船能不能去呢
Could they go without new yak feather boat?
他们郑重地穿上新衣服 去问佛
They will ask Buddha with new clothing seriously.
寺庙里的喇嘛不在 但是从山上下来的时候
Lamas are out. When they come down mountain,
顿珠心里已经有数了
Dunzhu has made his decision.

这天天气不太好
Though it is not fine,
但是嘎多活佛和贡觉活佛还是带着僧人们来装塔
Gaduo and Gongjue living Buddha
direct lamas to insert stupa.
在藏传佛教中有八种不同类型的塔
According Tibetan Buddhism,
there are eight kinds of stupas.
它们的功能不一样里面装的东西也不一样
The insertions are different
for different functions,
但是塔的结构大致是相同的
but the structure of the tower is same mostly.
通常由塔座、塔瓶、塔刹三部分组成
It usually consists of three parts:
stupa pedestal, stupa vase and stupa top.
现在装的已经是塔的中间也就是塔瓶部分了
Now ,it is time to insert stupa vase.

（贡觉活佛）长二十厘米 宽八厘米
It is 20 cm long and 8 cm wide.
不需要了
Not any more.
装的是一样的
It is the same.

藏传佛教认为
According to Tibetan Buddhism,
无论是佛像 佛塔和转经筒里面都要装藏
No matter what Buddha statues, stupas and
prayer wheels need insertions,
这样才具有灵异功能 可以产生神力
which could have special functions
and give birth to holy power.
装藏时除了各种经书和佛像之外
Besides kinds of scriptures and Buddha statues,
还要装五宝 五甘露、五药、五谷、五香等等
这些五谷杂粮 珍贵的金银珠宝 药材
five jewelries ,five types of manna, five medicines,
five kinds of rice and five incenses all are needed to be
inserted into stupa.
和植物矿物装进来 就可以使佛像或佛塔
不散不朽 不生虫蛀了
which could protect Buddha statues and stupas
from corroding and worms.

经书全装进去可能装不下
It couldn't hold all scriptures probably.

这个塔瓶里装的经书是12部《金刚经》
和各种佛的咒语
The stupa vase holds 12 rolls of << Vajra sutra>>
and all Buddhist mantras .
同时僧人们汇集了西藏各佛教圣地的天地精华
把对大自然的崇拜都装在塔里了
At the same time ,the essences of all holy land in Tibet
and the worship of people were inserted too.
跟这个一样的不止六十五个
There are more than 65 such kinds of Chacha.

顿珠始终放不下的是划牛皮船去转天湖的梦想
Dunzhu has never given up his dream to

虽然不能做新的牛皮船
Though without new boat,
虽然他去寺里问佛没有见到喇嘛
without meeting lamas during asking Buddha,
但是他还是决定要走
he decided to go finally.
他希望这次朝圣能给他和姐姐一家带来好运
He hope that this circumambulation could
bring back good fortunes for his family.
姐姐虽然怕顿珠走后家里没有劳动力
In view of lack of labor force,
the sister is hesitating.
但是看到他那么坚决 也就不说什么了
But she agreed finally when Dunzhu was
so firm in circumambulation
顿珠带着十六岁的外甥索朗次仁
划着家里的旧牛皮船上路了
Rowing old yak feather boat,
Dunzhu and his nephew set off.
他们要划到河对岸
Above all, they will arrive in opposite riverside
到曲水县的公路旁和他的朋友央培碰头。
and meet his friends Yangpei
on the road to Qushui county.

（顿珠平措）把头伸进去 然后转过来
Put your head in, turn your body then
一个浆往下放 另一个浆搁上面 就这样
Put one oar down and one up. Yes, just do that.
这样慢慢背起来
Carry it on the back slowly and go.
这样背着很舒服
You will feel very comfortable.

这是上路后的第一个考验
This is the first problem to overcome.
从河边到公路旁有两里多路
It is more than 2 miles from riverside to road.
顿珠背走了沉重的行李 而索朗次仁毕竟还小
Dunzhu carried on heavy luggage.
Suolangciren is still young.
这是他第一次出门 第一次背牛皮船
It is first time for him to leave home
and carry yak feather boat.

就在索朗次仁感受了路途的遥远和沉重的时候
While Suolangciren is suffering the hard journey and heaviness,
在扎西半岛上做佛事的僧人们
却迎来了轻松愉快的一天
Lamas greet a relaxed day on Tashi Island
who are doing Dharma things.
因为装塔的主要工程已经做完
Because the main insertions have been finished,
转经筒也都初步成型
the prayer wheel is initially formed,
嘎多活佛和贡觉活佛带着大家去转扎西半岛
Gaduo and Gongjue living Buddha lead everyone
to circumambulate Tashi Island.
一方面是朝圣修功德
One intention is to worship and practice merits,
另一方面也是让劳累了几个月的僧人们休息一天
Another is to let all tired lamas relax and have a rest.
扎西半岛上有许多自然形成的岩洞
There are many caves formed naturally on Tashi Island.
这些洞穴成了历朝历代的佛教高僧
和信徒们修行的地方
All high lamas and their disciples of generations
have practiced in these caves.
几乎每个岩洞里都可以看到很多岩画
Almost on the walls of all the caves were
carved precious prehistoric rock paintings.
也不知是哪朝哪代 什么人用什么颜料画上去的
We don't know who, when, and how did that.
已经是中午了 才走了不到一半的路程
Though it is at the noon,
lamas haven't completed the half of journey.
贡觉活佛还是一个很高明的藏医
Gongjue living Buddha is a skilled Tibetan doctor too.
藏民都很信赖他的医术 看到大家走得很累
Local Tibetans have firm confidence in his leechcraft.
他把自己做的灵丹发给大家 人人有份
Everyone is tired so Gongjue living Buddha is
handing out his holy pills to every body.

At the same time,
Suolangciren is still beside the Lhasa riverside….

索朗次仁在拉萨河边苦不堪言
Suolangciren suffered much beside the Lhasa riverside.
终于等到舅舅顿珠返回来接他
At last, Dunzhu returned to carry boat.
才把牛皮船背到了公路边
The yak feather boat reached the road eventually.

Tractor is coming….

I feel painful on my back.

You should carry it as me
走路要一颠一颠地走 你不会走

It is said that the water of Namtso is holy water.
用它洗浴可以圣洁身心.

已经接近了念青唐古拉山口……
After about seven hours driving,
Yangpei is closed to Pass of
Nyachen Thang-la Mountain.

天湖纳木措太大了
The Namtso lake is 200 kilometers in circumference.
光是东边这个小小的扎西半岛
绕一圈都要将近一天的时间
It would take one day to
circumambulate the small Tashi Island once.
要想把整个纳木措湖转下来
It takes about 20 days for pilgrims to
circle around it on foot.
步行要二十天左右 就是开车也要走几天.
It takes about several days by car either.
所以大多数藏民只是在扎西半岛上转岛
So, most Tibetans usually circumambulate Tashi Island.
据说如果转上十三圈也等于朝圣了天湖纳木措一圈
It is said that circumambulation Tashi Island 13
times is equivalent to circumambulation Namtso once.
这种带刺的植物叫荨?
This kind of plant with sticks is called nettle.
在寸草难长的高原地带 它却格外旺盛 遍地都是
It grows well over the plateau
while other plants is hard to grow.
如果不小心碰到皮肤上就会刺痛难耐其痒无比
You would feel painful and itchy
if you touch it carelessly.
又过了一个多小时 央培的拖拉机终于爬上了
Another hour went, Yangpei drove his tractor
海拔五千多米的念青唐古拉山口
on Pass of Nyachen Thang-la Mountain finally
which is more than 5000 meters about sea level.
这里是朝圣的人要祭拜的第一个地方
Here is the first site where pilgrims should worship.
从这儿已经可以看到天湖纳木措了
From here, Namtso Lake can be seen.

在藏族地区 人们对大自然非常崇拜
In Tibetan area, Tibetans worship nature very much.
他们相信万物有灵
They believe in that all things posses the perception.
在石头上刻上六字真言或佛像经文
To carve six ?syllable mantra prayer,
Buddha and scripture in stone
就是对神的供奉
is the sacrifice to gods
佛塔也修到塔尖部分了
It is time to build stupa top.
很多藏民都自愿地义务来帮工
Many Tibetans come here as volunteers.
顿珠的牛皮船吸引了越来越多的人
The yak feather boat is attracting more and more people.
他们没有见过这样的东西
They have never seen such kind of boat.
一听说要用这个东西去转湖 更是惊讶
To their surprise, Dunzhu will circumambulate
Namtso Lake by this boat.
而让顿珠他们吃惊的是当地人说
天湖里有四米多长的水怪水马水牛 而且还有龙
Dunzhu and his friends is surprised at
the saying of local people that
there are water monster, horse ,
yak which are more than 4 meters long,
furthermore there is dragon in the Namtso Lake.

There is some kind of matter in their mind.
趁着顿珠到湖面上试船的时候革命去找了活佛
While Dunzhu is trying his boat in lake
Geming goes for Living Buddha
嘎多活佛和贡觉活佛都很乐意帮助他们
Tough Gaduo and Gongjue living Buddha are willing to help them,
但是也觉得划牛皮船转湖 这种事从来没听说过
they haven't heard if someone could success in
circumambulation by yak skin boat.
贡觉活佛给顿珠的牛皮船写上了
观音菩萨的六字真言和莲花生大师的咒语
Gongjue living Buddha wrote the six ?syllable mantra
prayer of Bodhisattva Guanyin and the Mantras of
Padamasambhava on the yak skin boat of Dunzhu.
在佛教经典里记载
According Buddhist Sutra,
这些咒语是能够降服一切鬼神的
These Mantras can face down all demons.

头在云里面 尾巴在湖里
Its head was in the cloud while the tail in the lake.

颜色 黑色白色都有
It was black or white.
有时候它们一下出三四个五六个
Occasionally, three or four or five or six dragons
都一起这样出来了
were seen.
好几个这样对着呢 这样
The arrayed like this, you know.
可能（离它）太近有一些危险
Maybe ,it is dangerous to close it.

顿珠革命和央培也被巨龙的传说吓了一跳
Dunzhu,Geming and Yangpei were scared suddenly
when head the legend of dragon.
这可是他们从来都没有听说过的
The have never heard before really.
但是已经到这儿了 还有退路吗
Should they escape now? No.

顿珠三人来到纳木措的第二天
The second day of Dunzhu and his friends in Namtso

Live there, she has a stomachache.
（革命） 贡觉活佛看病还配药 一分钱都没收的
Besides cure the sickness, Gongjue living Buddha hands out medicines to patients freely.
[解说] 藏医学有两千多年的历史
Tibetan medicine has developed more than 2,000 years.
早在吐蕃时期就已形成了自己的体系
In early Tibetan times, it had come into being its own system
藏医的治疗方法多种多样
There are many approaches in Tibetan medicine,
内治法以服药为主 外治法有放血疗法
拔火罐 针灸和器械辅助治疗等
The internal treatments are taking medicine mainly
but external treatments are cupping,
bloodletting, acupuncture, moxibustion and
other instruments therapies.
贡觉活佛虽然出门在外
但是给人治病的东西都带在身边
Though Gongjue living Buddha is out home,
the medicine instruments are taken at all times.
别小看这几个铁针 它们是贡觉活佛用了十几年
治好了无数病人的医疗器械
Don't look down on these small needles,
which have been used more than ten years
and cured many patients.

（贡觉活佛）主要是看舌头底下有粗血管
See the wide blood vessel below the tongue,
用这个刀给他放血
then, let him blood by this knife.
（革命） 用这个刀割舌头底下的粗血管的时候
Dou you need any anaesthetic during bloodletting?
用麻药吗 要不然会很疼
Otherwise, he would be very painful.
（贡觉活佛）没有 不用 我们藏医治病不开刀 不打针
NO. There is no any operation and injection
in Tibetan medicine.

这时候嘎多活佛已经让僧人们准备了几袋青稞
Gaduo living Buddha have let lamas prepared
several bags of barley,
要把它们敬献给纳木措女神
which should be sacrificed to Namtso Goddess.
希望她能保佑这几个准备划牛皮船转湖的人
We hope Namtso Goddess could bless Dunzhu and his friends.
贡觉活佛专门写了一篇敬水的经文
敬告纳木措湖里的诸神保佑牛皮船上的人
Gongjue living Buddha have written a piece of sutra to
ask for all gods' blessings for Dunzhu and his friends.
看着僧人们这么帮忙
Because of helps of lama,
本来有些犹豫不决的顿珠一下子坚定起来
心里也轻松多了
Dunzhu made his mind right away who was in two
minds before. He relaxed gradually.
祭拜了纳木措湖之后 顿珠他们已经决定
明天一早 只要风平浪静就出发
After worship Namtso, They decided to set out
tomorrow morning if Namtso is calm at that time.

对于顿珠 革命 央培来说
这是具有历史意义的一天
For Dunzhu, Geming and Yangpei,today is their key time,
因为他们要做一件从来没有人做过的事
because they are going to complete one work
which have never been done before.
那就是划牛皮船去转1940平方公里的纳木措湖
that is to circumambulate Namtso lake by yak skin boat
which covers 1940 square kilometers (735 square miles).

（僧人嘎洛）去年九月十五日我看到过龙
At 15th Sep last year I saw dragon.
它在水里游过去的时候后面还有水波
The water waves were left back when it was swimming in the lake.
尾巴在水里摇着 溅起很多浪花
Its tail swayed and spattered much spoondrift.
（革命） 在水里看到的吗
Did you see it in the water?
是不是看到它上天了
Did you see it flying into sky?
（僧人嘎洛）从那边游过来 后来飞上天了
It swam from there and flied into sky later.
有多大 很大很大
Was it big? Yes, Very very big.
尾巴在水里 头已经进到云里了
Its tail was in water but head in cloud.

顿珠的外甥索朗次仁在临出发前退缩了
Suolangciren, the nephew of Dunzhu drew in his home before start.
他毕竟是一个十六岁的孩子
After all, he is only 16.
想到纳木措湖里有水怪和龙
他就害怕 不敢去冒险了
Thinking of the water monster and dragon,
he is scared and wouldn't run a risk.

（索朗次仁）到湖上龙把船顶起来怎么办
How should we do if the dragon rises our boat up?

剩下的三个大男人是没有退路的
The three men have no way to retreat.
贡觉活佛给他们挂好了经幡
Gongjue living Buddha helped them put up scripture flags.
嘎多活佛帮他们祭拜了纳木措女神
Gaduo living Buddha helped them worship Namtso goddess.
今天一早 阿多喇嘛又来给他们送行
In the morning, Aduo lama came to see them off.

（阿多喇嘛）祝你们顺利地回来
Wish you coming back in success.

不管这三个人是怀着什么样的心境
No matter what kind of mood three men are in,
在这个风平浪静的早晨他们从扎西半岛出发了
they set out from Tashi Island in the calm morning.
如果转湖顺利的话 他们回来的登陆地点还是这里
If it is all right,
they will still land here after circumambulation.
[同期声]
（央培）也许一个月都回不来
Perhaps it will take us more than one month to return here.
（顿珠平措）也许一辈子都回不来
Maybe we could never come back.
（央培）我可以坐这里吧
Could I sit here?

噶玛巴三世修行洞里的转经筒也要完工了
The prayer wheel in practice cave of
Karmaba 3 will complete soon.
僧人们要在这两天内把佛事基本做完
Lamas are going to finish all Dharma things
almost in two days,
因为有一个大卡车司机答应拉着他们去转湖
because a truck driver have promised to help them
circumambulate Namtso.
转经筒里的经书装好之后
Install scriptures in prayer wheel,
要用面粉做的浆糊把它封死 然后裹上布
seal it with flour paste,
then wrap it with cloth,
写上观世音菩萨的六字真言
write the six ?syllable mantra prayer of
Bodhisattva Guanyin on it,
外面再涂上清漆 才算完工
paint varnish on it finally .
All work has been completed at now.

（革命）应该这样绑 一旦有事拉这一头就行
Tie rope like this. You can draw this end
if we have emergencies.
（央培）如果掉到湖里
If drop in lake
真有仙女排着队欢迎我们的话
fairies welcome us in a line,
我就不回去了 我就待在这儿了
I would rather stay here than go home.
（革命）你想的美噢
Are you having daydream?
（顿珠）掉下去当个新郎官嘛
Be a groom in water.
（革命）水里的仙女根本没见过这种牛皮船
The fairies have never seen this kind of yak skin boat before.

三个小时之后……
Three hours later…

因为有水怪和龙的传说 他们三个商量好
Because of the legend of water monster and dragon,
牛皮船一定要遛着边走
they decided to row boat along the lake side.
一旦有什么事情 可以马上靠岸
If has any emergencies
they could pull in shore right away.

（央培）这里没有水 喝点儿茶
There is no fresh water; you can have some tea please.
（顿珠）酥油茶 慢慢喝
Butter tea; enjoy it slowly.

就在他们从北岸划到了南岸
Just when they arrived in south bank from north bank,
离念青唐古拉山越来越近的时候
Nyachen Thang-la Mountain is closer and closer,
湖面上出现了一个不明物体
an unidentified subject appeared in the lake.
因为谁都不敢确定他们看到的是什么
三个人决定上岸再说
Because they can't confirm what it is,
they made their decision to land firstly.

同一天 扎西半岛
In the same day, Tashi Island

佛塔已经全部建好了
The stupa was completed entirely.
僧人们还要念经 加持塔的灵性和神力
Lamas will read scripture to bless spiritualism
and holy power of stupa.
对当地的藏民来说
看佛塔开光 听僧人颂经 都是福份
For local Tibetans, it is lucky to watch consecration
and listen to reading scripture.

中午 天湖纳木措的南岸
At noon, the south bank of heavenly lake Namtso

（央培）喝了很多 吃得饱饱的
I am full.

上了岸的三个人这会儿又轻松起来
他们开始嘲笑自己的胆小
The three men began to relax in shore.
They stared to laugh at their own cowardice.
原来在湖面上看到的不明之物
上岸之后已经逐渐清晰了
In fact, the unidentified subject in lake
is clear gradually.
可以看得出来 那是几个岛屿
they are several small islands originally.
其实很早就有人观察过
As a matter of fact,
somebody observed that scene long times ago.
天湖纳木措的水面是湖心高湖边低的
The water level of Namtso is high
in center and low in lakeside,
再加上光线的折射
远远望去就会产生这样的奇观
with the refraction, the marvelous spectacle
appeared if we look from faraway.
不过 顿珠 革命和央培一致认为
那儿一定是一个仙岛
But, Dunzhu,Geming and Yangpei think unanimously
that it must be immortal island.
三个人再次行船湖上的时候已经不再害怕了
they would never be scared when rowing boat in lake again.
但是他们又多了一份对仙岛奇景的想往
They have a longing for the marvelous spectacle
of immortal island.

六个小时过去了……
Six hours elapsed…

从早晨出发到现在已经走了将近十个小时
但是扎西半岛好像还是近在咫尺
It has taken about ten hours' rowing,
but the Tashi island is still near at hand,
而那个缥缈的仙岛也依然是遥遥相望
that indistinct fairy island is still far away.
转湖的第一天 纳木措湖非常平静
In the first day of circumambulation,
Namtso Lake is very calm.
这三个人像是神仙一样 悠哉悠哉
Three men are carefree as immortals.

黄昏的扎西半岛……
In the dusk, Tashi island…

僧人们在两个佛塔之间盖了一个"擦康"
把装塔剩余的擦擦放在里面
Lamas built one "Chakang" between two stupas.
They put surplus small stupas in "chakang".
"擦擦"是用活佛高僧的法体火化后的骨灰
混合在红粘土里 用模子脱出来的泥塑
"Chacha" is clay sculpture ,which is made of ashes
of high lama's dharma body and red clay.
信徒们制作擦擦的目的是积善功德
The disciples make "Chacha" to accumulate
kindness,merits and virtues.
一般都把它装藏在佛塔里
It usually is put into stupa.
把酥油抹在玛尼石上
Put the butter on Mani stone
就像在寺庙里点燃酥油灯一样
也代表一种供奉
which likes ignition butter lamp in monastery.
It means one kind of sacrifices.

（央培）这个牛皮船泡在水里时间太长了
进了很多水
The yak skin boat has been dipped in water
too long time. Lots of water leaked in boat.
（革命）你从那边抬 我从这边抬
You raise that side and I lift up this side.
（顿珠）今晚就放这儿吧 放上面
Put here tonight. It is better to put higher.
（革命）行了
Ok.
（顿珠）绳子应该这样拴
You should fasten rope like me.
别打在脚上
Don't strike your foot.
（央培）把木板撑在绳子中间
Put board in the middle of rope.
搁哪儿都一样
It is same to put in other place.
疼吗 有点儿疼
Are you painful? A little.

（牧民）那边有个寺庙
There is a monastery over there.
（央培）那边云底下有座山
There is a mountain over there below cloud.
过来这边云底下有座山
Come here, here is a mountain.
那个地方 就在那座灰色的山旁边
Just over there, the monastery is beside
有座寺庙 叫什么来着
the gray mountain. What is it named?
（牧民）多加寺
Duoga monastery.
（央培）从多加寺往那边 还有一座寺庙
There is another monastery near Duoga monastery,
就在那边发白的那一块儿
just near the white place.

快乐的牧羊姑娘用歌声为他们送行
就这样 第二天的行程又开始了
The happy shepherd girl saw them off with song.
They set out again.

同一天 扎西半岛

今天 嘎多活佛和贡觉活佛要在扎西半岛上
再树一个经幡塔
Today, Gaduo and Gongjue will set up another
scripture flag stupa on Tashi island.
完成这个佛事之后 他们就要去转湖了
After that ,they are going to circumambulate Namtso.
竖起一个大的经幡塔不是一件容易的事
It is not easy to set up a big scripture flag stupa.
首先要把地方选好
Above all, the right place should be chosen,
经幡塔里也不能没有宝藏
at the same time , the treasures is needed,
舍利 珍宝和佛咒也要装在经幡塔顶上的宝铃里
finally, Buddhist relics, jewelries and mantras
should be put in treasure bell on the stupa top.

（贡觉活佛）这里一扎 这里一扎
Tie up here, tie up here.
（僧人） 我来 我来
I would do that.

今天 扎西半岛的天空出现了罕见的祥云
The rare auspicious cloud appeared today
in sky of Tashi island.
对于僧人们来说 这是好兆头
It is good omen for lamas.
尽管他们连午饭都没有吃 但是仍然干得热火朝天
Though they didn't have lunch,
they still work in full swing.

南岸的牛皮船划得很艰难……
At this moment,
It is hard to row yak skin boat …

今天的纳木措湖起浪了
Namtso upsurged today.
从来没有坐过船的革命和央培
第一次尝到了晕船的滋味
Geming and Yangpei who have never taken ships
suffered from seasickness for the first time.

Your tears come out.
革命真的累了 真的
Geming feel tired really.
（顿珠）我把你一块儿拖着走
I help you pull it.

浪越来越大 不仅是革命和央培
连顿珠都有些害怕了
the waves get stronger ,not only Geming and Yangpei
but also Dunzhu is scared as well.
他们索性靠了岸 拉着船往前走
They land neck and crop and go forward
by drawing the boat.

经幡正在紧张的制作中……
Tashi Island
Lamas are busy making scripture flags…

在藏区 人们把经幡称为风马旗
In Tibetan area,
the scripture flag is called the God of wind.
因为地域不同 风马旗的形状也各有特点
There are different shapes in different areas.
但是有一点是相同的
用五种颜色对应金、木、水、火、土
but one feature is the same that is five colors
correspond metal, wood, water, fire and earth.
以五行的循环往复表示五色佛光的普照
The five elements circulations represent
five Buddhist colors illumination.
它可以给人带来好运
It can take luck back.

（贡觉）好 慢慢抬起来
Ok, put it up slowly.
经杆没插到坑里以前
Before putting scripture role into hole,
先往我这边推 往我这边推
Push toward me first,
把杆插到坑里面 再往那边拉
put the role in the hole next, then draw toward there.
知道了吗 知道了
Understand? Yes.

Be slow. Be slow.
快了不行
It is too hurry to do well.
现在加石头
You can put stones now.

这已经是嘎多活佛和贡觉活佛
在纳木措竖起的第三个经幡塔了
This is the third scripture flag stupa which was built
by Gaduo and Gongjue living Buddha in Namtso.
他们希望竖起来的经幡
能使纳木措风调雨顺 免除灾难
They hope these scripture flags could bring
good harvest back and protect Namtso from disaster.
浪实在太大了 牛皮船就像一片小小的树叶
随时都会被大浪掀翻
The wave is so strong that the yak skin boat would be
turned over at any time as a small leaf.
三个人只好上岸扎营，等待风平浪静后再说
They have to land and camp.
What they could do is waiting for good weather.
这时候僧人们正在做圆满经幡塔的佛事
At the moment, lamas are doing Buddhist things to
help scripture flag stupa get great perfection.
明天一早他们也要去转湖了
Tomorrow morning they would circumambulate
Namtso Lake as well.
念经的声音传得很远 很多藏民都赶来了
The sound of reading scripture spread very far.
Many Tibetan come here.
看到飘扬的经幡 他们心存感激
Seeing scripture flags flying in wind,
they thank for lamas' work.
把自己仅存的积蓄供奉给这些僧人
They donate their few savings to lamas,
僧人们也用虔诚的经文为众生祈祷
in the same way lamas pray for all creatures
by reading pious scriptures.

头已经慢慢钻到云里去 就这样上去了
but heads fly into cloud slowly.
当地人看到后 有的人说要下雨
Seeing that scene local people say that it would rain.
你在近处看到龙的时候颜色是不是花的
Is it striped?
近处看是花的 但远处看是黑的
Looking closer, it is striped, but it is black when look faraway.

革命羊皮和顿珠对龙的传说已经深信不疑
According to Geming Yangpei and Dunzhu,
There is no doubt that there are dragons in Namtso.
有些害怕 但也很想看看天湖纳木措的龙
到底是什么样子
They feel a little scared but they look forward to
Confirming what kind of dragons look like.
但是如果待在这里动不了的话
就什么都谈不上了
But if they still stay here all along,
nothing would be gotten.
正当三个人近乎绝望的时候
僧人们转湖的车走到这里
When three men came to despair,
lamas of circumambulation arrived by truck.
看见湖边的帐篷和牛皮船
知道他们有事就过来了
Seeing the tent and yak skin boat,
they know that the three men are in trouble.
贡觉活佛知道了他们现在的难处
建议一起搭车往前走
Knowing their troubles,Gongjue living Buddha
suggest that they can go with lamas.
等到天晴以后 再放船到湖里
If it is calm they could row the boat again.
这当然是最好的办法了
三个人巴不得能和僧人们一起同行
Of course, it is the best way to solve the problem.
Three men are only too anxious to go with lamas really.

纳木措湖南岸的小村庄
转湖第四天清晨
The small village on south bank of Namtso Lake
The 4th morning of circumambulation …

活佛来了的消息在这个小村庄传开了
The news that living Buddha has come got abroad
in this small village.
虽然天上还是阴云密布 牧民们还是赶来了
Though it is cloudy, local herdsmen
rush into village together.
对于这些牧民来说
For these herdsmen,
跟活佛说说家里的难事 内心的苦恼
求得活佛的指点和祝福 是一件很幸福的事
it is very happy to talk afflictions and worries
with living Buddha and get directions and blessings.
这时候 贡觉活佛也在忙
他被牧民久美请到家里
Gongjue living Buddha is very busy now.
He is invited in Jiumei's home.
久美的老婆已经生病三年了 一直不好
Jiumei's wife has been ill for about three yeas.
贡觉活佛除了给她拿药之外 还准备做一个法事
Besides giving her medicines, Gongjue living Buddha
would hold a Buddhist rituals.

希望得到指点
and get some directions.
贡觉活佛答应忙完了法事就找他
Gongjue living Buddha promised to tell him
after the Buddhist rituals.
久美老婆的头发、指甲和穿过的旧衣服
都被放在这个小筐里
The hairs, nails and old clothing of Jiumei's wife were put in
the small basket.
在活佛念过经以后就要把它送到天葬台去
After Living Buddha reading scripture, the basket
would be sent to the celestial burial cemeteries.
藏族人认为 这样就可以去除旧我获得新生
According to Tibetans, one would get rebirth
from past by that way.

在传统的藏医学里
According to traditional Tibetan medicine,
风湿病的治疗方法之一
就是用烧红的铁针烧烫穴位
one of approaches to treat rheumatism
is that burn the points of body by hot needle.
据说这种铁针的材料都是有讲究的
It is said that the materials of iron needles are special.
为了以毒攻毒必须用见过人血的刃器来打造
To combat poison with poison,
the needles must be made of sharp-edged materials
which brought into contact with blood of man.
贡觉活佛的这根铁针已经用了十几年
治好了无数病人
Gongjue living Buddha has employed the needle
more than ten years which cured countless patients.

（贡觉活佛）我再找一找 是不是这儿 是
I will try again. Is it here? Yes.
把铁针再热一下

抹这个酥油 是为了防止伤口发炎
Putting on butter is keep wound from infection.
以前有人发过炎
Some one has been infected before.

牧民们还是接连不断地来找贡觉活佛
Herdsmen come to see
Gongjue living Buddha incessantly.
当送走了最后一个病人的时候 已经是黄昏
今天僧人们不能上路了
When Gongjue living Buddha saw the last patient off,
it has been in dusk. Lamas couldn't go on today.

累坏了吧 有点儿累
Are you tired very much? A little tired.

虽然累了一天
Although been working a whole day,
但是贡觉活佛没有忘记革命求他的事情
Gongjue living Buddha has never forgotten
what he promised to Geming.
他开始查阅经书史料 寻找那个仙岛
He began to look up for that immortal island
referring to scriptures and historical materials.
原来革命他们看到的仙岛叫斯摩岛
In fact, the immortal island that Geming had seen
is called Simo Island.
是佛教高僧修行的一个圣地
It is holy land where Buddhist masters
had practiced before.
早在几百年前的经书上就记载
有三位高僧曾经上岛修行
According to scriptures of hundreds years ago,
three masters have practiced on Simo Island.
到目前为止 很少有人能上斯摩岛
那是一个神秘的圣地
Up to now, few people could go to Simo Island
That is one secret holy land.

他们巴不得快点启程
找一个离斯摩岛最近的地方划牛皮船上岛
They look forward to setting out early
and go to Simo Island right away by yak skin boat.
一路上僧人们不断地把五色的纸经幡抛向空中
Lamas throw five colors scripture
In the air continually,
这也是祭拜天湖的一种方式
which is another way to worship
the heavenly lake Namtso.

铁锹呢 铁锹呢 那边要铁锹
Where is shovel? They need it.
现在石头不要了
The stones are enough.

车子在这里陷了很长时间
The truck has stuck in the mud long time.
附近的牧民甚至孩子都赶来帮忙
不用说话 只是出力
The herdsmen, even children come to help lamas.
They try their best without any words.

第六天 纳木措湖北岸
The 6th day, the north bank of Namtso
[解说]
经历了六天的行程 靠着僧人们的帮助
After six day journey, with the help of lamas,
顿珠、革命和央培终于来到了纳木措湖西面
靠近斯摩岛的地方
Dunzhu, Geming and Yangpei arrived in the west of
Namtso eventually, where is near the Simo Island.
贡觉活佛一直把他们送到水边
Gongjue living Buddha has accompanied them to waterside.
[同期声]
（僧人）我们带着宝瓶 就埋不了
We take the treasure bottle all along but we can't bury it.
（贡觉）找一个好地方 挖个洞
Look for a good position, then dig a hole.
（革命）在山洞里挖个洞行不行
Could we dig a hole in cave?
（贡觉）不要在山洞埋 找一块儿地 挖一个深洞
Not in cave, but find a good place, then dig a deep hole,
把它埋进去 用土把它盖上 别人发现不了
Put it in hole next, cover it with earth finally.
No one could discover it.
实在不行 找一个小山洞
If it doesn't work actually, you could find a small cave.
用石头把它封在里面 不要让人看见
Cover it with stone and No one could discover it.
（僧人）千万要好好埋 没问题
Cover it up carefully. No problem.
（贡觉）你拿着这个宝瓶 今天就别抽烟了
Bring the treasure bottle seriously and don't smoke today.
（革命）好的 好的 这是我跟你说真的
Yes. Yes. I am serious.

实际上僧人们最向往的就是这个佛教圣地了
In fact, lamas yearn toward the holy land badly.
只是因为他们还要尽快回到纳木措
去做一个大法事
Because they have to return to Namtso as soon as
Possible to hold a great Buddhist ceremony,
所以把珍贵的宝瓶交给革命之后 僧人们就离去了
Handing rare treasure bottle to Geming, lamas left slowly.

（央培）要不然我们在这里停一下 看看天气再说
Maybe we should have a rest here.
What about the weather?
看这个天 晚上可能要下雨

For the ordinary people Simo Island is
visible and inaccessible.
只有在冬天冰封湖水的时候才有可能走过去
It is accessible just when the water is frozen.
而这三个人要做一件史无前例的事情
But what the three men will do is unprecedented in the world,
他们要划着牛皮船上岛
they will reach Simo Island by yak skin boat.
三个人先小心翼翼地把船划到了一个半岛
Rowing the boat carefully, they reached a byland.
目测的距离 这里离斯摩岛最近
According the distance of eyeballing,
it is the nearest way to Simo Island here.
三个人犹豫和等待一直到了黄昏
虽然天色有些阴沉
但是湖面很平静 没有浪
Waiting until dusk, it is cloudy still,
but the lake is calm.
思来想去 三个人还是决定划船上岛
Thinking it over, three decided to land
Simo Island by boat finally.
据他们估计 有一个小时可以过去了
According their estimation, it will take about
one hour to get to Simo Island.
[同期声]
（顿珠）今天晚上有可能就在湖中间了
Maybe we will stay at the middle of lake.
（央培）我还真不希望这样
I don't expect that really.
（革命）我可不想出事 我带了这么多东西
I too. I bring many things.
（顿珠）这些东西算什么
They are nothing at all.
[解说]
朝思暮想的仙岛已经近在眼前
The Simo Island that they yearn day and night
is closer and closer.
按照佛教的说法 如果能上斯摩岛
According to Buddhism, if someone could go to Simo Island
就是转湖朝拜功德无量的事儿了
he would get boundless beneficence of
circumambulation and worship.
这也是顿珠、革命和央培壮着胆子
鼓足勇气上斯摩岛的原因
That is the reason why Dunzhu, Geming and Yangpei
boost their courage to go to Simo Island.
更何况还有活佛的祝福和保佑
In addition, they have blessings of Living Buddha.
[同期声]
（央培）希望今晚一定到斯摩岛
I hope we could arrive in Simo Island tonight.
如果能到 所有的活我都包了
If we reach finally I would do all works.
[解说]
刚出发不久 央培首先害怕了
Setting out before long, Yangpei felt scared firstly.
这也难怪,他和革命从来没有在这么大的湖中行船的经历
Geming and he have never sailed a boat in such vast lake,
which is understandable.
在贡觉活佛找到的经书里曾经记载着
According to sutras that
Gongjue living Buddha referred to,
在几百年前有一位高僧坐一个小木船到斯摩岛修行
Several hundreds years ago,
one dignitary was going to Simo Island to practice.
船走到湖心的时候 风大浪高
When he arrive in the center of lake, the wind blew
Dramatically And the wave was very high.
很多水怪趴到船头 想要掀翻木船
Many water monsters grovelled at fore
and want to turn boat over.
这时候高僧面不改色口颂观音菩萨的六字真言
At that moment, the Buddhist master remained calm and read
the six ?syllable mantra prayer of Bodhisattava Guanyin.
慢慢地 风停了浪静了 水怪也不见了
这位高僧才顺利地上了斯摩岛
It was calm gradually and water monsters disappeared.
The master reached Simo Island finally.

一个小时之后……
One hour later…

谁也没想到一个小时过去的时候
牛皮船仍然在湖中漂荡
One hour later, to their surprise,
the yak feather boat is still rowing in the lake.
而斯摩岛则像一条蜷缩的巨龙
Simo Island crouches there softly and
looks like a giant dragon.
静静地伏在那里看得见却摸不着
You can look at but can't touch it.

三个小时过去了
天湖纳木措没有风浪
依然平静……
Three hours later,
Without stormy waves,
heavenly lake ,Namtso is still calm.
[同期声]
（革命）顺着哪儿走好 这里也没有搭帐篷的地方
Which way should we go along?
There is no place to put up tent.
慢点儿 慢点儿 往这儿划
Row slowly and toward this way.
（顿珠）这个地方搭帐篷还可以
It is good to put up tent here.
（央培）这个地方挺好 挺合适
It is very good.
（革命）就搭这儿吧 好吧
Put up tent here. Ok.

三个多小时对这三个人来说
是一次漫长的从来没有过的心理考验
Three hours' endless journey is a long psychology trial
that they have never tried before.
但是他们最终战胜了恐惧他们登上了斯摩岛
At last they overcame dreads and went on the Simo Island.

转湖第七天
纳木措湖心的斯摩岛
The 7th day of circumambulation
Simo Island, in the center of Namtso
[解说]
贡觉活佛讲的经书里记载
According to Gongjue living Buddha,
那位排除万难上了斯摩岛修行的高僧
在岛上遇到了各种恶魔的挑战
getting rid of all difficulties,
the master was challenged by all kinds of demons.
他与这些邪恶的水怪斗法整整八年
He had fought against evil water monsters for eight years.
在这八年当中纳木措湖一直都没有冰冻
这样他也就没有办法下岛
In the eight years, the water of Namtso had never frozen,
so the master couldn't leave off Simo Island as well.
当高僧已经没有食物可吃的时候
When the master had no food to eat,
他的仆人决定自杀 让高僧吃他的肉来充饥
his servant decided to commit suicide
to let master eat himself.
这时候高僧劝住了他
At that moment, the master prevented
servant from doing that.
并且告诉他湖上已经有路了
He told servant that there was an ice way already.
仆人不信到湖边一看
The servant didn't believe at all,
果然一条一尺宽的冰路从斯摩岛一直通向对岸
then, he went to lakeside and saw a ice road
that could access to opposite bank.
仆人万分惊讶 高僧却非常平静地说
The servant was amazed extremely
but the master told him calmly
我看到了佛祖 他告诉我
that I had seen Tathagata.
八年的苦修 我的功德已经圆满了
Tathagata told me that I had achieved great merits and
virtues with self-torture of eight years.
当高僧和仆人下了斯摩岛到达对岸
再回头望去的时候
When master and his servant left Simo Island and
reached opposite bank they looked back.
湖面上的冰路已经消失 又是一片汪洋了
The ice road had disappeared. The only thing left
behind them was boundless water again.

（央培）有四头牦牛 五个 六个
There are four yaks, five or six yaks.
[解说]
斯摩岛上不是没有生命的
Simo Island is animate,
这些牲畜大概是在冬天湖面结冰的时候
these livestock must have been sent to Simo island
as free captive animals by local herdsmen
被当地牧民放生到这里的
when water was frozen in winter
他们生活的自由自在
They live here at ease.
一直到幸福地老死在这里 还有美丽的鲜花陪伴
They would have happy life all along. After their death,
the beautiful flowers will accompany them for ever.
走了很久 选了好几个地方
三个人终于找到一个好位置
After long walk and a few choosing,
the three men found a good situation finally.
把贡觉活佛给他们的宝瓶埋在里面
They covered up the treasure bottle of
Gongjue living Buddha.
[同期声]
（央培）我没这个东西 有的话我一定给你
I have no this kind of things.If I have I will present you.
（顿珠）宝贝
Treasure.

在贡觉活佛托付给他们的这个宝瓶里
In the treasure bottle
that Gongjue living Buddha handed over them,
有各种金银珠宝和西藏各个佛教圣地的矿藏宝物
there are many kinds of jewelries and minerals
from all holy hand in Tibetan area.
藏传佛教认为宝瓶可以镇邪消灾保一方平安
According to Tibetan Buddhism,
treasure bottle could keep down demons,
protect from disasters and bring the safety.
因为斯摩岛被认为是天湖纳木措的心脏
Because Simo Island is thought the heart of Namtso,
贡觉活佛希望把宝瓶埋在这里
Gongjue living Buddha hoped
that covering up treasure bottle here
可以保佑纳木措湖一带风调雨顺百姓安康
could bless good harvest and health of Tibetan in Namtso.
[同期声]
（顿珠）别把宝瓶砸了 别太使劲
Don't make the treasure bottle broken.
Don't exert much strength.
（顿珠）可惜了 应该多带点儿桑
It is a pity that the Shang is not enough.
（革命）把那个圆石头拿来
Take that round stone back.
（央培）把它压上去
Press with it firstly.
（顿珠）把那些草扶起来
Rise grasses up with hand.

谁也没想到在高高的山顶上居然也有玛尼石堆
To their surprise, on the top of mountain
there is Mani stone stack actually.
而且在一块巨大的青石板上
纳木措女神像清晰可见
Moreover, on a piece of giant blue flagstone,
The image of Namtso Goddess is seen clear.
是谁能够把这么大的石板从水上运过来
又怎么把它背到山顶上呢
Who could carry such giant flagstone here by waterway?
Further more, how could he carry it on the mountaintop?
三个人燃起青烟 顶礼膜拜
The three men burned blue smoke,
kotowed and worshiped here.

（顿珠）把那个石头摆一下
Put that stone in right way.
[解说]
用松枝燃起烟雾是藏传佛教的一种仪式叫煨磉
According to Tibetan Buddhism, the ritual that
burning smoke with pine branches is named Weishang.
据说在煨磉的过程中产生的香气
神仙闻到会香气十分高兴
It is said, the fragrance that is produced
during Weishang is smelled by immortals,
they will be very happy.
眼看着天色已晚
三个人又在山顶上垒起了两个玛尼石堆
It is getting dark. The three men put up
two pieces of Mani stone stack again.
把他们对佛的虔诚对纳木措女神的崇拜
永远地留在了斯摩岛上
Their godliness of Buddha and worship of Namtso goddess
were left on Simo Island forever.

牛皮船转湖的第八天
The 8th day of circumambulation

一早起来顿珠、革命和央培就划船离开了斯摩岛
In the morning, Dunzhu,
Geming and Yangpei left off Simo Island.
到目前为止 他们转湖的里程才走了一半
Up to now, only a half of the journey of
circumambulation is completed.
后面的路还长着呢
There is a long way to go later.
